Elevation in liver enzymes

So last week, my potassium level was low but has returned to normal after taking the potassium pills prescribed by my oncologist. This week, my liver enzymes are high.

I'm not sure exactly what this means yet as I have not spoken with my oncologist about it. Does this mean the chemo is damaging my liver?

probably from the neupagen - are you still taking that? It's temporary - they should return back to normal... (ALT/AST)

I'm an L&D nurse so only have experience with that...but when patients have elevated liver enzymes (sgot, sgpt) when they have pregnancy induced hypertension, their liver enzymes return to normal after delivery with no long-term effects on liver. Would make me inclined to think it could just be a temporary elevation.

I stopped the Neupogen shots 7 days after the first round of chemo. We'll see what the blood tests tomorrow show.

I belive that the posted cmments by the two friends are correct. The elevated liver enzymes ALT (ak GPT) and AST (ak GOT) are temporary and will return to normal. Your another liver enzyme LDH is still in the normal range. Your doctors will explain to you more authoritatively, however I think the enzyme elevation shows that your chemo has been working. 5-FU and cisplatin stop DNA replication in both cancer and normal cells and prevent new cell formation, resulting in lack of tissue repair and death of some old cells and release of liver enzymes from them. Once the drug effect is over, everything will be fine. Make sure you watch Joel Osteem's program regularly. God uses him to tell us what God wants us to know: Be positive on the God side. Things will be fine. David Lin
